About NIPNews

Today’s News. Tomorrow’s History. Your Pictures.

What Is NIPNews?

NIPNews is a crowdsourced local news and historical photo archive where individuals and verified organizations can publish photographs documenting places, events, people, organizations and everyday life.

Our purpose is simple: to give everyone the opportunity to document the events and moments of today that together become tomorrow’s history.

We believe history should not be limited to the photographs selected by professional news organizations, governments, institutions or historians. The people who are there should be able to contribute to the record too.

Our Editorial Approach

NIPNews is built on a simple editorial idea: everyone should have the opportunity to document the events, places, people and moments of today that together become tomorrow’s history.

We welcome photographs and information from people with different backgrounds, experiences, interests and points of view.

NIPNews does not promote or favor a political, ideological, racial, religious, economic or other sectarian viewpoint, and we do not allow the platform to be used to promote hatred, harassment, division or hostility toward others.

We also do not publish sexually explicit, gratuitously graphic or otherwise clearly inappropriate imagery. Legitimate documentary or newsworthy material may be subject to editorial review rather than automatic exclusion.

Within those boundaries, our role is not to tell contributors which stories matter or which point of view they should hold. Our goal is to provide a neutral place where people can document what they see and preserve a broad, factual visual record of our communities and our time.

How NIPNews Works

NIPNews is organized around photographs.

Contributors upload pictures of the places, events, people, organizations and everyday moments they believe are worth documenting. Each published photograph becomes part of a searchable record organized by information such as place, date and subject.

NIPNews is intended to preserve both major events and ordinary life. A town meeting, championship game or historic storm may be important, but so may a changing streetscape, a local business, a school event, a building before it disappears, or simply what a community looked like on a particular day.

Photographs can be contributed by individuals and verified organizations. Contributors provide information about what a photograph shows, where it belongs and when it was taken.

NIPNews may use technology, including artificial intelligence, to help analyze, organize, moderate, describe and make contributions searchable. Technology can assist the process, but it does not replace the contributor’s responsibility for the information submitted or NIPNews’s responsibility for operating the platform.

Over time, individual contributions can create something much larger: a visual record of communities created by the people who were there.

How NIPNews Organizes Photos by Place

Place is fundamental to NIPNews.

A photograph is more useful as a historical record when future viewers can understand where it belongs. That is why NIPNews places particular emphasis on towns, cities, neighborhoods, landmarks and other geographic places.

Dates, events, organizations, teams, people and subjects add additional context, but geography provides the foundation for much of the archive.

What NIPNews Verifies — and What It Does Not

NIPNews is a crowdsourced platform. Publication of a photograph or information on NIPNews should not, by itself, be understood as independent verification that every statement supplied by a contributor is correct.

NIPNews may analyze information, compare it with other information, identify inconsistencies, request clarification, correct organizational or factual errors, and distinguish information that has been independently corroborated from information that has not.

An inability to independently verify something does not necessarily mean it is false.

Our goal is to preserve useful information while being clear about what is known, what was supplied by a contributor, and what may remain uncertain.

Building a Local Historical Photo Archive

NIPNews is not intended only for exceptional photographs.

An ordinary photograph can become historically important with time. Buildings change. Businesses open and close. Roads are rebuilt. Landscapes change. Teams play their seasons. Communities celebrate, debate, build and gather.

A photograph that seems routine today may answer an important question decades from now.

That is one reason NIPNews encourages people to document everyday life as well as major news and public events.

Who Owns Photos Contributed to NIPNews?

For ordinary contributions, photographers and other copyright owners retain their copyright while granting NIPNews a non-exclusive license that allows the photograph to be hosted, displayed, reproduced, resized, cropped, archived and promoted in connection with NIPNews.

A contributor may separately choose to contribute a photograph anonymously. Anonymous contribution is an explicit and irreversible choice and assigns the copyright in that photograph to NIPNews.

Leaving the Photo Credit blank is not the same as choosing Anonymous and does not, by itself, transfer copyright.

The detailed rules governing contributions are contained in NIPNews Policies & Guidelines and Legal & Privacy.

Organization Accounts on NIPNews

NIPNews allows verified organizations to contribute photographs and document their communities and activities.

Organization accounts are intended for real organizations whose representatives can be verified through the organization.

An Organization contributing a photograph is different from an Organization merely appearing in or being associated with a photograph. This allows NIPNews to distinguish between photographs contributed by an Organization and photographs about that Organization contributed by other people.

Events on NIPNews

NIPNews includes public Events as another way to document and organize local life.

Events help people discover what is happening in a community and, after an Event has occurred, connect photographs with the Event they document.

An Event listing helps provide context. The photographs contributed by people who were there create the lasting visual record.

A Living Archive

NIPNews is designed for both the present and the future.

Today, someone might use NIPNews to see what is happening in a town, find photographs of a place, explore an Event, or contribute a picture.

Years from now, someone may use those same photographs to understand what a neighborhood looked like, when a building changed, what happened at a community event, or what everyday life was like at a particular moment in time.

The more people who contribute useful photographs and accurate information, the more valuable the archive becomes.

Our Mission

Our mission is to build a broad, useful and enduring photographic record of our communities and our time — created not by a single newsroom or institution, but by the people who were there.

Today’s news becomes tomorrow’s history.

Your pictures help preserve it.
